August 18

In the sandy roadsides along back roads that are less traveled, the chicory is thriving now. In the early morning, the purple-blue of its flowers are deeply concentrated as the petals are together like a closed umbrella, waiting for the warmth of the sun to fully open.

The color is no less diminished in midday, when the half dollar sized flower is in full display, in clusters set within the corded stalks. Few blues match the richness of chicory, and even the cerulean sky of those summer days where the humidity is so low that the blue overhead is deeply concentrated, is less striking.

Along Nanigian Road, the chicory combines with spotted knapweed, and the effect is a mosaic of purple and blue splashes of color set against the deep greens of the tall grasses and ivy.
