Across
the street they planted corn yesterday in the field that fronts Grove Street
and is next to Anna Maria’s cross on the hillock of land. To look at the field
now doesn’t inspire too much, as it is simply a collection of row upon row of
plastic bedding that has holes poked through in successions of 12 inches or so.
For our
part, we like to consider that the midsummer clock has now been wound in the
form of these newly planted seeds, and we will bear witness each day to their
progression toward the sweet crop that will result in late July. For now, we
are content to simply enjoy the unfolding of our spring, but this planting is
an undeniable anticipation of what will be many of our summer meals.
