The
young deer have been active these past two weeks, and we see them in the early
morning or in the evening, walking through the woods next to the house either
coming from or going to the fields.
The
changing daylight has hastened the rut, causing young bucks to lose their
senses in pursuit of the does, who are now in estrus. The result is that we
must be cautious – the deer are more reckless in the roadway, and when driving
we look to the woods that border Grove Street, scanning for the reflection of
deer eyes in the headlights.
Hunters
too will be in the woods, for it is bow season and this means that we wear
bright colors for awhile, particularly in the woods.
