The
birds have increased their presence at the side yard feeders, draining both
tubes of black sunflower seed in just under two hours. There is a large storm
to hit tomorrow, bringing a foot of snow that is to fall steadily through the
day. The birds must be anticipating its arrival and are stocking ahead. We are
no different really, as the grocery shelves will be empty of milk and bread by
this afternoon.
A small
downy is having difficulty with the pole, landing near the crook to get a
closer look at the tube but not getting purchase on the metal still covered in
a glaze of ice from the storm several days ago. He has only a moment at the top
before sliding slowly down the pole, all the while gripping it with his
diminutive claws.
At the
bottom, he plops amid the seed-covered snowpack, looking nonplussed as best I
could tell, before flapping quickly to the top once more. Again he descended.
This went on for five rides, before he gave up and took to the lower woods.
