The
tractor was out this morning moving up and back along the rows across the
street, pulling behind a large mower deck to cut down all the skeletal stems of
last autumn’s crops. With the snow gone yesterday and the return to the
twenties today, the ground must be hard enough to accept its passage.
These
past few days have been disorienting, firstly on account of the warmth and
melt, and now to both hear and see the tractor in the fields. It is tempting to
think that it is April, despite the return to cold.
In the
afternoon we took the dogs around the perimeter of the field, letting them run
ahead in the dirt of the two track while we walked slowly behind, looking
across the rows that were mowed where now only stubble pokes through the soil.
All about are shredded seed pods and stems, un-harvested crops and bits of
weed.
